FLATS AND HOUSES

MR. FRASER'S VIEWS

Although . flats met requirements under certain circumstances, he would use all his influence against the people becoming flat dwellers, stated the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) at his meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, Clyde Quay, last night. There had been some argument about flats since the opening of the Dixon Street block, said Mr. Fraser, but the Minister of Housing (Mr. Semple) had made clear what he had said on that occasion. The best type of housing for New Zealand, continued Mr. Fraser, was undoubtedly the individual house with space for a garden. There were, however, young people who came to the cities to find employment,, childless couples both of whom perhaps went to work and had no time to look after a garden, or old people who did not want a • garden (although many old people liked gardening), for whom flats served the purpose. : : v-

"But for families," added Mr. Fraser, "in my opinion they are just the wrong thing. Families require a proper house and that is the Government's outlook in regard to the matter." Later in the meeting when he was asked about the allocation of State houses, Mr. Fraser said that the difficulty at the present time was that there were so many necessitous and tragic cases, and ':■ there were not enough houses. If war had not broken out and it had been possible to go ahead with the housing programme, of providing 14,000 houses a year there would not have ■ been, a scarcity of homes. As a result of the war it had been necessary: to.^divert the men before they could-get. into full production to defence 1 construction works. The Government aimed at reverting to the original programme as soon as that was possible. Mistakes might have been made in the allocation of houses but the Government's desire was to do everything possible to see that iustice was done to those in greatest need. He also said that the Government aimed at buildin,g houses for families of all sizes. :.-■-•■
