Rofcossovsky, in his advance on Kiev, is using the Desna Valley; which has been crossed at several points. Paris radio said that huge Russian armies, supported by tanks and planes, are attacking the German positions along both sides of the Eoslavl-Smolensk road. The German covering forces in; the southern sector are engaging the Russians who are trying to.'prevent their 'retreat. "Red Star," describing the capture of Chernigov, says that the Germans called up dive-bombers and fiercely contested the ground. They launched counter-attack after counter-attack. The Russians by-passed the town to the west and threatened to cut the only escape railway, but not even this threat could induce the; Germans to evacuate the town. Russian cavalry almost completed a ring around the town, but after three days of bitter fighting the town had to be carried by, storm.
