OPPOSITION SPLITS
POLITICS IN AUSTRALIA
Rec. 9 a.m
CANBERRA, Sept. 22
Meetings of the United Australia Party and of the Country Party today decided to operate as separate entities within Parliament, thus breaking the working arrangement that has been in existence for some years.
Mr. R. G.'Menzies was elected leader of the U.A.P., and, as it is the largest party after the Government, lie will also be Leader of the Opposition. Mr. W. M. Hughes, who led the party in the last Parliament, did not seek reelection, but was elected deputy leader. Mr. A. W. Fadden was re-elected leader of the Country Party.
