FURLOUGH PARTY

QUESTION OF FUTURE

A question about the future of the members of the Second N.Z.E.F. at present, home on furlough was asked by a lady member of the audience at the meeting addressed v* the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) in me Brougham Street hall last night. Mr. Fraser said that the whole matter was one that would have to be considered by the Government, but he indicated that the married men with children might be given the option 01 deciding whether they wished to return overseas. "I would like to know whether Mr. Fraser is in favour of the boys on furlough from the Middle East going back a second time before* others have been once," said the questioner. "I have been asked by several furlough boys to ask that question " "It is a very fair question to ask, replied Mr. Fraser. He added that the members of the furlough party had come home on the understanding that they were on furlough. He would also say that unless trained men went back some of the other members of the Second N.Z.E.F. would not be able to be given furlough. It was only natural if there were men in industry who could replace these men that there should be a feeling that that should be done. The most he could say was that the matter was being examined. So far as the. married men with children were concerned, for his part he would urge, and he thought it would be accepted, that they be given the opportunity of staying if they did not want to go away again. He hoped it would be found possible for all cases to be considered. The questioner said that several single men had raised the matter with her. Mr. Fraser said it might be necessary for the appeal tribunals to sit. If the Labour Government was returned to office the matter would have to be one of the first considered.
