CHARGE AGAINST WOMAN
The hearing began in the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., of a charge against Clara Hallam, 58, apartment-house keeper, of permitting premises in Abel Smith Street to be used as a house of ill fame. She pleaded not guilty, and Mr. C. H. Weston, K.C., and Mr. A. L. Hollings appeared for her. In opening the police case SeniorSergeant G. J. Paine said that the hearing would take some time. The police had eighteen witnesses,, including members of the Police Force and of the United States Marine Corps, and several civilians. The defendant had conducted numerous apartment-houses in Wellington and-the police had found it necessary to warn her on occasions about the conduct of the houses, in which there had been disturbances and arrests.
The hearing of evidence for the prosecution is proceeding.
