WANGANUI GUINEAS

GULF STREAM WINS

HANDICAP TO AQUEDUCT

Although the track was very heavy at Marton, on Saturday, conditions were actually better than had been expected, a strong wind overnight having worked some improvement. Light rain set in after the racing started and momentarily caused unpleasantness. It was merely a passing shower. From the point of view of calibre, the field for the Wanganui Guineas of 1943 was hardly up to standard, and the victory of Gulf .Stream was largely due to the vigorous riding of W. J. Broughton, who drove his mount along to take charge at the half-mile. Royal Heir and Magnus Lux joined in crossing the top, the. latter • having been chopped out kt the start, but Gulf Stream shot to the front again to j narrowly hold off the faster-finishing! Financial, who came home very solidly.' At the rear' crossing the top, Linbury was a creditable third, although about three lengths back. Magnus Lux, Carnforth, and Royal Heir were practically, in line, with the favourite, Greek Art, who met with a check three furlongs from home, having only Pallelle behind him. . A SHARP IMPROVEMENT. A big disappointment in the Mara'ngai Handicap on the opening day, Aqueduct had improved sufficiently in the interim to lead all the way in the Higgie Handicap. Amigo went with him early, but the Tiderace gelding worked clear turning" across' the, top, and thereafter was never in danger of defeat. Alexcelia came from a long way back for second, three lengths back, with Crucible, who had run up on the turn, a head away. Flying Hawk, handy throughout, could not hold his position and was beaten into fourth, with Sanction ahead* of Full Hand, who again had a lot of ground to make up. A REPEAT WIN. Borak, winner of the Okehu Hurdles on the opening day, repeated the effort in the Gonville Hurdles, but in more comfortable fashion. Hunting Mac, j although he' was getting, in a trifle close at some of his. fences, set a merry pace till half a mile from home, j where Marisura .and Borak moved up to the pacemaker. Borak took over approaching the last fence and then [held off the fast-finishing Mansura by a length, with Hunting Mac weakening into third: Moderate was under pressure a long way from home and could not do better than fourth. Circular Note and Monmouth were next. WON VERY EASILY. Backed down to. a very short price for the Apprentices' Hack Handicap, Vera X-ynn forged to the front to turn into; the straight holding a winning margin, but the favourite commenced to weaken and dropped right out of the „ picture at. the , distance. . Here I Solver, who had been handy throughout, forged .to the front to win very comfortably from Keen Play, who had a big slice of ground to make up, with Royal Son coming through along the rail for third, ahead of Hamish: Sports Flash never looked likely, and the prospects of Sir Fox were ruined by failing to Jump out on terms. AT GOOD ODDS. A big upset came in the Trial Handicap, which was run in one division, when Peter's Choice got up to touch off Ozel and pay- over a score, with Beneve a fair third. All three placed horses returned ; good . place-dividends. Although Leisurely and Valconia were the smartest, to begin, Ring Scarf and Ozel raced past to lead to the turn, where Ozel'drew clear. Turning into the straight Ozel was holding a commanding lead, but Peter's Choice slowly gathered the leader up to win by a head; with a gap to Beneve, who had moved up on the turn. All Bunsby, Toora Vale, and Ring Scarf were next. ;'. : ■ ■ ■■■■.■■' yV ■■MADE' AMENDS. ". ,' Holding a handy position all the way in the Moutoa Hack Handicap, Sovereign^ Lad, took over, the running from Skipper Gay* and although Flahuluk came, home particularly well the leader was doing it comfortably at the post. There was a keen struggle for third, War Effort shading War Credit, with Cheap Lodging ahead of Gold Dip arid Young- Jim.. Both Skipper Gay and High Morale stopped, and Foxchase also weakened after running forward from the rear to be up with the winner at the straight entrance. THRILLING FINISH. The. Owen Handicap was productive of .a thrilling finish between Whackie and Flying Ace, who had run first and second respectively on the opening day, but in .this instance Flying Ace turned the tables by the narrowest of margins. Neither were well placed early, but Flying Ace ran up fast on the turn to be in charge at the entrance, where Whackie challenged. Inside the distance Whackie appeared to have the measure of his rival, but Flying Ace responded to take the advantage only to be again rapidly losing it at the post. Betterman and Sir Bradbury did well to take third and fourth respectively after being badly away,-and Black Robe, another sufferer at the start, was fifth. A NORTHERN SUCCESS. Visitors from the north played a very modest role throughout the day, but in the Spring Hack Handicap, the concluding event, Powys got on the winning list. He was a. shade fortunate in that The Grand had to be eased and straightened up when drawing up to the ..winner half-way home. The disappointnng Fox Cover was a length and a half back, with Kahuranaki ahead of Theatre and Darag. A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. Despite the fact that only one favourite won, the-large crowd that attended the Wanganui Jockey Club's Meeting on Saturday' wagered very freely, and the £40,757 10s handled represented an Increase, of £17,413 10s over the second day last year. .
