CONCESSIONS TO SEAMEN

Sir—l congratulate the Prime Minister, and Parliament also, on the legis- •'■ lation( recently- approved which is to "benefit men of the Mercantile Marine, ■ but I cannot understand why the privilege of travelling on our railways, at half standard rates for the purpose of visiting relatives or friends when their •'■ ship is in New Zealand waters, and =' which those on British overseas vessels ? "'enjoyed up until December last, was 'I then cancelled, and why, notwith"'i standing several letters written to the ; Minister of Railways, nothing has been •I'- done to reinstate this privilege, 'although, I believe, some two months v ago early consideration by Cabinet was ; 'the concession asked is _but small recognition for the all-important and dangerous work which British^ seamen and their Allies continue to do so cheerfully and "When this letter was referred to the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser), he indicated that he was looking . into ■ the matter with a view."to : the .reinstatement of the privilege. ;^; ;^
