ESCAPED PRISONERS

GERMAN PROCLAMATION

LONDON, September 16.

Rome radio broadcast the following proclamation from the German Supreme Command: —"All British and American prisoners of war who have escaped from Italian prison camps must report to the nearest German military authority. Those who comply will be treated according to the Geneva Convention. If they are found in possession of arms or resist they will be dealt with according to martial law.

"Italians assisting British and American prisoners of war will be courtmartialled.

"Italian soldiers, including those whose formations are already disbanded, must report immediately in uniform to the nearest German military command. Those disobeying will be court-martialled. Those who volunteer to serve in Italian units under the German command will be treated according to German military law." Eight Italian ships have arrived at Limasol, Cyprus, with Italian servicemen who escaped from the Germanheld Dodecanese Islands.
