(By Telegraph—Press Rec. 1 p.m.

Reuters Moscow correspondent, commenting on the Desna River fighting, says the struggle is on a really gigantic scale, an^ threatens to blow a hole in the entire German defence plan. The German High Command planned to hold the Desna as its final line of resistance for the winter, but the line has already been smashed at one point.

Berlin radio has admitted that the Russians have penetrated the northeastern suburbs of Novorossisk. « It said that fresh Russian forces, supported by artillery and tanks, continued to attack the north-eastern suburbs, l#.it were frustrated.

The Berlin report also stated that there was particularly fierce fighting south-west of Byeloi, where "several divisions with numerous tanks pierced the German lines here and there. The Russians broke into the German lines at two points on the Roslovl-Moscow and Smolensk-Moscow highways, but the penetrations were neutralised."
