ON MISSION TO RUSSIA

ARCHBISHOP OF YORK Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 15.

The Archbishop of York, Dr. Cyril Garbet, has arrived in Moscow. He is visiting Russia as head of a Church, of England delegation to express the sympathy of the Church of England for the sufferings of the Orthodox Church, of Russia at the hands of the Germans. The visit is strictly ecclesiastical and non-political. The Orthodox Church, not the Soviet Government, extended the invitation, aryi neither the Soviet nor the British Government is in any way involved.

The Dean of Canterbury, Dr. Hewlett Johnson,' said the visit will be welcomed as a milestone on the road to Anglo-Russian understanding. ' It is a fitting gesture on behalf of the Anglican Church, following recent evidence of Mr. Stalin's religious toleration.
