ITALIAN WARSHIPS
ANGLO-SPANISH TALKS
Rec. 10.50 a.m
LONDON, Sept. 15
The Press Association's diplomatic correspondent reports that Britain and Spain are negotiating regarding the disposal of seven Italian v.-arships which escaped from Spezia and put in at a port in the Balearic Islands on the conclusion of the Italian armistice.
Italian submarines which have fallen into Allied hands are expected to reveal many important Nazi U-boat secrets. Improvements devised by German technicians include modifications in radio-location gear, submarine motor developments, automatic tor-pedo-directing apparatus, and protection against depth charges. In addition, Italian submarine personnel may supply vital information about the German submarine strength and the effect of the Allied bombings on submarine buildings and bases. Colombo reports that the Italian naval" escort vessel Eritrea (2200 tons) entered Colombo Harbour, flying the black flag of surrender. She escaped from Massawa in February, 1941, to avoid capture, but where she has been since is a complete mystery.
