GLOWING TRIBUTES

DOMINION'S WAR EFFORT

P.A. AUCKLAND, September 15. A cablegram received from the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Mr. Churchill) in connection with the capitulation of Italy and landing of Allied troops on the Italian mainland was read by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) at his meeting in the Auckland Town Hall tonight. The reading of the message was received with long and tumultuous applause by the audience.

The message, which was in reply to one sent from Mr. Fraser, was in the following terms: "I have shown Mr. Roosevelt your telegram of September 10, and we both send you our grateful thanks. You must indeed be proud of the fine contribution of your forces to these great events. New Zealand has never failed to do its utmost for the common cause, and I am sure it never will fail."

A personal message from Mr. Roosevelt was also delivered at the Town Hall during the meeting, but came to hand too late for the Prime Minister to read it to the audience. It said: "I am vei'y grateful for your kind message on the fourth anniversary of the outbreak of the war. This occasion gives me a welcome opportunity to pay a tribute to New Zealand and its magnificent contribution to our common war effort. .No nation during these four years has set a higher standard of devotion to our common cause than New Zealand. No nation has given mope unstinted co-operation in all phases of our joint efforts. Already the fruits of the co-operation of ourselves and the other United Nations are amply evident.

"The landing of the Allied troops on the Continent of Europe on the fourth anniversary of the war is striking evidence of the distance we have gone together. At the same time, we go forward together on other fronts, including the South-west Pacific. The bonds of friendship and comradeship between our peoples are drawn even closer through our common efforts and common sacrifices. Our unfailing unity in spirit 'and purpose^ and our wholehearted co-operation are , our sure guarantee of final and complete victory. -^(Signed) Franklin, D. Roosevelt.
