MR. SEMPLE WELL RECEIVED

P.A. AUCKLAND, This Day. The Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) met with no opposition at two of three largely-attended meetings in the Grey Lynn electorate. At the third meeting, held in the Grey Lynn library, j there were a few interjectors who were silenced by the vigour of the Minister's replies and enthusiastic cheering of the audience. The attendance in the Cameo Theatre, Grey Lynn, was about 400, and there were fully that number at the Ambassadors Theatre. Point Chevalier. Resolutions of confidence with but two dissentients were adopted at the latter two meetings, ■■ and they closed with cheers for the Minister and Government. Special interest was centred in the Minister's visit to this electorate on account of it being the seat of Mr. J. A. Lee.

WELLINGTON SOUTH , The statement that the position would be righted in cases where the husband was old enough for the age benefit under social security and the wife was not was made by Mr. R. McKeen. Labour, Wellington South, speaking at Berhampore last night. The hall. was packed and the candidate was given a good hearing. Replying to a question relating to taking over the banks, Mr. McKeen said the Government had used, and would continue to use, the financial and productive resources of the country, in the interests of the people. There was no fancy way of producing money. When an interjector claimed that private enterprise had carried out the building programme for defence, Mr. McKeen said the Government had appointed the man and given the direction as to requirements and Mr. Fletcher had done a really good job. It was the intention of the Government to release men for the building industry as the defence programme slackened off. At the conclusion of his address Mr. McKeen was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
