OBITUARY
MR. W. R. KING
The death occurred suddenly in Wellington yesterday at the age of 42 of Mr. William Russell King, who was a prominent figure in Rugby and cricket circles and well known as a radio sports announcer. He was the eldest son of Captain W. S. King, former champion rifle shot and bandsman, and was educated in Christchurch. For some years he followed journalism as a profession. He came to Wellington in 1929 and was closely associated with, sport being a leading official of the Poneke Rug-by Football Club and a member of the junior advisory committee of the Wellington Rugby Union, coach of the Training College team in recent years, and deputy chairman of the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League, with which he had a long association. In recent years he was secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board Employees' Union, and was one of the three representatives of the union on the National Council of the New Zealand Harbour Boards' Employees' Union. Throughout his career his interests centred on publicising the efforts of others, which led to his assembling a big collection of performances and personal anecdotes relating to prominent performers in sports. Mr. King took a keen interest m Labour affairs, being president of the Roseneath branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. He was also a member of the Roseneath School Committee and deputy district warden, No. 13 area, E.P.S. He leaves a widow and five children.
