MR. FRASER'S TOUR

CHRISTCHURCH MEETING P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) was given a good reception by an audience of 1300 at the Civic Theatre this evening. Almost every seat was occupied and there were a number of persons outside. Very few interjections were made during the address, and a vote of thanks and confidence was. carried by an overwhelming majority on a show of hands after there had been some dissenting voices. The Mayor, Mr." E. H. Andrews, presided. WELLINGTON WEST Mr. C. M. Bowden, National candidate, addressed a good audience at the Aro Street Mission Hall last evening, and, though at times there were some good-humoured interjections and comments, the candidate was, accorded an attentive hearing,' and a vote of confidence was carried without dissent. Mr. Bowden said that out of the welter of conflicting parties it was becoming increasingly apparent that the real issue lay between the Fraser Government and the- National Party, which was the only one capable of upsetting the Government. The Fraser Government was out of touch with the mood and needs of the people, he said, and a change was necessary if the Dominion was to progress and deal adequately with returning servicemen and the rehabilitation of industry after the war. The audience was keenly interested in the special features of the National Party's housing'plans, and a declaration that the war damage insurance would be discontinued met with hearty endorsement.

A member of the "Waikato Times" staff received a telephone call last Thursday} and a strange voice asked: "Can you tell me what the sirens are sounding for?" "Italy has surrendered," answered the pressman. "Is that all?" said the voice. "I thought perhaps Germany had fallen, too." The pressman was speechless!
