Russian forces captured two stations on the Bryansk railway, network today, They are at the gates of Bryansk, and the battle for; this formidable stronghold is about to begin.

The Moscow communique reports that Soviet troops in this area advanced from seven to ten miles during the day, occupying more than 30 villages and capturing two Bryansk railway junctions which lie only two and a half miles to the south-east of the town itself.

These junctions, half a mile apart, link up the main trunk lines from Smolensk in the north-west, Kaluga in the north-east, Orel and Kursk to the east, Kharkov to the south, and Gomel to the south-west.

The communique says, "Our troops have approached right up to Bryansk.'' Successes on other fronts are "also announced.

To the south, towards the Sea of Azov, the Red Army* is continuing to develop their offensive in the west and south-west and today it advanced from four to nine miles, occupying more than 90 inhabited places. Among the towns taken were the district centre of the province,. Seventy places were taken on another sector to the south-west of Bryansk. In the Paluki region the Russians advanced from ,seven to eight miles and took 150 .villages. Similar successes are announced in (the Roslavl zone, north-west of Bryansk, where the Russians advanced from three to four miles and occupied over 40 places.
