DIAGONAL PATH
NEW STATION APPROACH
When the roadways and lawns in front of the Railway Station were laid out on paper full consideration was given to all the requirements of cars and taxis and people on foot—as they could be seen, on paper—but what could not be foreseen was that people on foot would make their own arrangements. So instead of following marked crossing places and walking round the lawn in the Featherston-Bunny Street angle they simply went across at an angle and trampled the lawn bare. The Automobile Association took the' question up with, the City Engineer and a new plan was agreed upon by the council. The work so decided on is in hand now: a new diagonal path with bricked side walls, in conformity with the rest of the lawn surrounds, is being taken across the lawn and the pedestrian crossing over Featherston Street from the Bunny Street corner is being swung at a new angle to lead to this pathway. Besides giving pedestrians a paved path on the line that they would take any way, grass or no grass, the new arrangement should help a great deal in keeping people on foot off the "in" carriage-way from Bunny Street. That there have been no serious accidents on this carriage-way has been due to a combination of luck on the part of pedestrians and of good driving (accompanied by expressions of muttered good will to people on, foot) by car and taxi drivers.
