MR. JOHN DOWN
The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. John Down, formerly superintendent of Mount Crawford Prison. Mr. Down had a wide experience of the Prisons Department. . He had been in charge of tree-planting camps at Hanmer and Waiotapu and of parties which opened up the Waikeria and Hautii prison farms. He was largely instrumental in starting the nursery of native shrubs on Mount Crawford. When he retired in 1937, after 40 years' service, he was in charge' of the Wellington prison, where he had commenced service with the Department as an assistant warder. Mr. Down is survived by his wife and a daughter, Miss Marianne Down, 8.A., a teacher attached to the Taranaki Education Board.
