KHANDALLAH FATALITY
A finding that James Andrew Hendry, 55, retired engineer, died on August 19 in the Wellington Hospital from head injuries received wljen he was struck by an electric train at the Khandallah station level crossing the same day, was made by the Coroner '(Mr. W. G. L. Mellish) at the inquest yesterday afternoon. The Coroner, after hearing the evidence, said that Mr. Hendry was deaf and that he was walking over the crossing in heavy rain with an umbrella up and he must have failed to see the red lights flashing or to hear the warning bells or the signal from the train itself.
The evidence was that the engine driver applied the brakes of the train when he saw' that Mr. Hendry had ignored the warning signal and that the train was slowing down when it struck him.
Mr. S. G. Stephenson appeared for the widow of the deceased, and Mr. B. A. Sargisson for the Railway Department. . ■
Ten persons were fined up to 30s and costs by Mr. W. C. Harley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday for operating wireless sets without licences.
