SAILOR FINED

"If everybody did the same thing constables would not be able to handle a crowd at all." said Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today concerning William Cyril Crockford, 28, rating.in the Royal New Zealand Navy, who pleaded not guilty to obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty, but was convicted and fined £2. •The police evidence was that there was a disturbance in a city street last night when some, New Zealand sailors wanted to fight Americans. Although Crockford was not one of those wanting a fight he refused to move when asked by a constable to do so, and he pushed the constable. He was quite sober at the time.

: Mr. W. B. Brown said that Crockford did not think he was obstructing the constable, whom he thought was slightly officious. It was a stupid act more than anything else. The police said that Ccockford had a good record in the Navy.
