GAS SHORTAGE
MINISTER'S EXPLANATION One of the reasons for the. shortage of gas in some parts of New Zealand, t said the Minister of Labour (Mr. Webb) in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, was the fact that gas undertakings had installed retorts of a type that depended upon Australian coal and were not suitable for using New Zealand coal. Now that Australian coal was not available the gas undertakings were not able to meet the increased demand, especially in Auckland and Wellington, and would not be able to, no matter how much Westport coal was delivered to them. " * It. was a mistake to think that the waterside workers were in any way to blame for the gas shortage, but the Minister said he had taken the matter up with the Waterfront Control Commission and had asked- it to endeavour to arrange for work on Saturdays, Sundays, antf at night for the unloading of coal. He was confident that there would be a good response to that request. ,
