A GAME EFFORT

NOKO'S STEEPLES WIN

' With five furlongs to go in the July Steeples at Trentham-on Saturday Bisquit was bowling along well clear of his nearest attendant, and the odds appeared to favour his* staying there. Within the next furlong, however, Noko made a move and steadily drew up: At the final obstacle Noko was practically on terms and was not required to be ridden out to maintain the upper hand over the "final furlong. It was a game effort on the part of the Sir Simper gelding, for he was giving away 231b to Bisquit, whose rider went to scale lib overweight. Better of Pair.—Although the indications were that Spendthrift was considered to be the better of the Hazlett representatives, the July Steeples definitely showed Noko to be the better over a three-mile journey in heavy going. Before leaving home Spendthrift claimed the better record, having won both open 'chases at River ton, which is no mean test, but the distances were restricted in view of the earliness of the season. Brilliant though he might be over a short course, Spendthrift, like so many Paper Moneys, is not a genuine stayer. Despite not being particularly big, Noko is better favoured, for he is by Sir Simper, the last of the progeny,of the Symington mare Simper, dam also of Affectation, Gold Light, Razzle'Dazzle, Dazzling Light, etc., from the Tractor mare Dark Marie. His grandam, Directoire, produced Frenchman, Moulin Rouge,. The Parisian, Apache, Paris, and Taramoa. It is interesting to note that the name of Taramoa was also accorded the four-year-old son of Man's Pal and Dazzling Light, winner of the Australian Cup in March last, but this member carries Mr. W. T. Hazlett's colours.

Appreciated Drop.—An illustration of the difference weight makes was furnished at Trentham in Bisquit. In the Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeples on the opening day this northerner could not do better than run sixth with 10.12, yet with 9.5 he led till the final furlong in the July Steeples, an open-class event. Farther Honour. —By following up his Great Northern Hurdles win with another in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham Town Survey became the second horse to complete this double in the past 20 years. The earlier winner of both was Beau Cavalier, who took the honours in 1928. By no means impressive from the point of view of looks. Town Survey has natural pace and jumping ability. He is by Smv veyor from the Archiestown mare Marbletown, the latter a daughter of the Marble Arch mare Lady Marble, so has jumping blood on both sides of his pedigree.

Form Fluctuates.—While several horses displayed consistency at the Wellington Meeting, the form of others fluctuated. Based on his easy win on the opening day Khurja was installed a firm favourite for the Corunna Hurdles on Saturday, but the Bulandshar gelding was never travelling like a winner. However, as he has been troubled with t unsoundness, the old trouble was probably responsible. On the other hand, Authoress, who had retired into ninth place in the Trentham Hurdles, made a big improvement' to run second to Town Survey in the Winter Hurdles. Unfortunately, the chestnut was lame on returning to scale.
