NO CHANGE IN POSITION
LONDON, July 9. ■ The twin battles of the Kursk salient continued to rage with all their fury today.
Tonight's Moscow communique says that the Germans are still throwing in large tank and infantry forces in their offensive at both ends of the salient, but the communique does not report any change in the position. They say that they knocked out 193 more German tanks today, bringing the total enemy losses since the offensive began to up to the 2000 mark. The Red Air Force is to the fore in the battle, hitting the enemy ground forces hard. The Russians report the destruction of 94 German aircraft today.
The Germans describe the northern and southern lines of the salient as a "flaming battlefield," and say their troops have never fought so hard before. Both sides are reported to be throwing in new armoured forces, and Berlin radio says the Russians have been making non-stop attacks to seal up the wedges driven in the Byelgorod region yesterday. The fact that the enemy has not made any big claim about the offensive is good evidence of the stubbornness of the Russian defence.
