SUBSIDY REFUSED
In common with smaller boards in the Dominion, the Bay of Islands Harbour Board was enduring a time of financial stringency, said Mr. J. G. Ritchie, who was re-elected chairman at the annual meeting, states a Kawakawa correspondent. The loss on the year's working exceeded £1100, and the striking of Id in the pound rate, the same as last year, was necessary. The sub-provincial branch of the Farmers' Union wrote expressing the opinion that the harbour debt should be the responsibility of the Government through the War Expenses Account rather than the ratepayers. The board replied that its suggestion to the Government for a subsidy of onetwentieth of a penny on every pound of meat railed to Auckland had been rejected.
