WAR PICTURES, 1914-18.
An exhibition1 of the woi*k of three official wax- artists attached to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the war 1914-18 is now on view at the National Art Gallery, D.I.C. It is the first time those pictures have been shown to the public, and they are of particular interest not only for their historical interest but for the quality of their painting. The artists represented m the collection are Messrs. George Butler, Nugent Welch, and F. H. Cumberworth. There has been little of George Butler's work shown in New Zealand.previously, and these pictures show what a ■fine and versatile artist he was. He lived abroad for over thirty years and did not return to New Zealand before his death in London in 1937. Nugent Welch has a group of oils and water-colours, all painted on the spot, and these are particularly vital. The exhibition will-be open for four |Weeks
