WOMAN FINED £20

A fine of £20 was imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., on Margaret Rose, a married woman, of 33 Mem Street, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to selling liquor without a licence.

Senior-Sergeant Paine said that the defendant's husband was serving overseas. In consequence of complaints received a police party went to the house on Saturday evening. A serviceman in the party. entered the house, but the defendant would not sell him any wine. However, another serviceman who was on the premises sold him a bottle of wine for 15s in the defendant's presence, and on a later visit the .defendant sold him two bottles of wine for 15s 5d each. Twentyfour full bottles of wine, 100 empty beer and other bottles, and a number of cartons which had contained wine were found in the house. The defendant had not been before the Court before. She was employed at a wine shop in Farish Street, from which the wine was taken to her house. I

Mr. J. A. Scott said he was instructed that the wine had been taken to the house in contemplation of a party. The serviceman to whom the wine was 'sold had previously been refused several times, but he kept on pressing for liquor until it was finally sold to nim. In imposing the fine, the Magistrate remarked that there was a little more liquor on the premises than was necessary for a party. He ordered1 the wine to be confiscated, adding that it did not appear to be in the house for private use.
