LATE MR. COATES

MR. CHURCHILL'S MESSAGE

"I was deeply grieved to learn of the sudden death of Mr. J. G. Coates," states Mr. Winston Churchill in a message of sympathy to the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser). "After his long service to New Zealand and to the Empire as a whole I know this is a very serious loss to you all, and I should like to extend my heartfelt sympathy." Mr. Fraser has also received the following message from the French High Commissioner, Noumea: "I am profoundly moved by the sudden death of the Hon. Gordon Coates. The cordial confidence shown to us by Mr. Coates on the occasion of his visit to New Caledonia during the last few months had made him, to us Frenchmen, a friend much more than an ally. And it is with that we feel this loss. I beg you and members of the Cabinet to convey in my personal name as in the name of the French population of the Pacific our most sincere condolences on this sad occasion."
