CHAIRMAN'S DEFENCE
MR. BARCLAY'S MEETING
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. "It is incorrect for the Minister to say I made no attempt to call the meeting to order," said Mr. Henry Smith, of Waikaka Valley, who was chairman of the meeting at Gore last week which was addressed by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Barclay). Mr. Smith was replying to a statement by j the Minister about the reasons forj his action in leaving the meeting. "When Sergeant-Major T. C. Yates challenged the Minister 1 immediately called for order," Mr. Smith said. "Ser-geant-Major Yates immediately respected my ruling. Unfortunately, Mr. Barclay, who became very heated, declared his intention of leaving the meeting, which up to that point, with the exception of an occasional inter- ] jection, had been well behaved and given the Minister a good hearing."
