MAY DAY EVE
RUSSIAN FESTIVAL
RIVAL ARMIES KEYED UP
LONDON, April 30. In Russia it is the eve of the Soviet Union's big May Day festiyal, and also the eve of a month which, in the words of the newspaper "Isvestia," will probably see the beginning of the I decisive stage in the war of liberation on the Eastern Front. With both armies all along the battlefront keyed up for these events, the people of Moscow are still finding time to hand ( out flags and banners for the festival. Correspondents say that all the banners this year, in fact the whole of the celebrations, have one single theme—the defeat of the German invaders. There is still no word in Moscow about the new offensive which the Germans say the Red Army has launched in the Kuban. Hitler's communique today again refers to this, and speaks of heavy defensive fighting in the face of large Russian forces of linfantry, tanks, and aircraft
