U.S. SILVER FOR BRITAIN
I (Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, April 30. The way in which Great Britain's acute shortage of silver, both for inidustrial purposes and coinage, is being [met by the United States and Canada is shown in a statement by the United States Lend-lease Administrator, Mr. E. R. S,tettinius, to the Senate Special Silver Committee. He said that by June 1 Britain would have exhausted her silver completely. Her supplies from India had dried-up through heavily increased Indian domestic demands for silver due to the increased war activity and the presence of a large number of troops. Britain needed 5,000,000 ounces of silver in the first half of 1943. The original proposal called for "lendleasing" to Britain 3,250,000 ounces of silver by June 1, but it appears that Canada may be able to supply a greater amount of silver than was anticipated and that 3,075.000 ounces will be supplied under lend-lease. Two million ounces are to be made available as soon as possible.—B.O.W.
