MASS PLANE DELIVERIES
WASHINGTON, April 30. American Lightning fighters are making regular transatlantic mass flights to North Africa and other combat areas, states the War Department. The first crossing involved the transfer of several hundred planes, of which only one was lost. The weather forced down and damaged six, whose pilots were rescued. Large numbers have since been delivered under their own power from Californian factories to the battle fronts using both the north and south Atlantic routes. The Lightning? are equipped with releasable auxiliary fuel tanks under the winga. two of which double the planes' normal range. The Lightnings are accompanied by Flying Fortresses for navigational purposes, also transport planes carrying mechanics and servicing equipment.
