CLEARING SUMMITS

ADVANCE OF BRITISH UNITS (Uy Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 9 a.m.) LONDON, April 30. Violent battles are still going on in the Medjerda Valley, the Goubellat Gap, and north-east of Font dv Pahs, says Algiers radio. Repeated German counter-attacks have been held everywhere. The enemy is retreating from one hill to another, British infantry is clearing1 all the summits, and artillery and mortars are hammering at the enemy's positions. The Eighth Army has advanced nearly eight miles from Enfldaville and enemy resistance has been overcome despite violent fighting. Vichy radio says the Allies, by present tactics of local attacks, hope to breach the Axis lines to Tunis, but that the attempts have so far not been successful. The German defence is extremely vigorous and the British are the first to admit it. The obstinacy of defence and coun-ter-attack show how well yon Arnirn understands the part he has to play.
