OBITUARY
MR. SIDNEY KIRKCALDIE
The death occurred at Tauranga on Sunday of Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie, a former chairman of directors of Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd. He had been living at Tauranga in retirement for the last three years. Mr. Kirkcaldie held numerous directorships prior to his retirement some twelve years ago. Among other positions he was chairman of the local board of directors of the Commercial Union Assurance Company, chairman of directors of Inglis Bros, and Company, vice-chairman of the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, and president of the Trentham Scholarship Funds and the citizens' committee of the Karitane Plunket Hospital. He was bom in Wellington in 1873 and educated at Wellington College and Wanganui College. He commenced his
commercial career as a junior with Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., in 1894 and in 1899 went to England for experience, returning to New Zealand two and a half years later. He was subsequently appointed chairman of directors of the firm. Mr. Kirkcaldie was a member of the former Karori Borough Council for eighteen months. In 1903 he married Miss Elsie May MacGregor, whose death occurred about nine years ago. He was a member of the Savage, C.T.A., Wellington Racing, and Hutt Golf Clubs, and also belonged in former years to the Rotary Club and Wellington Art Society.
Probably the greatest public service Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldie gave to NewZealand was during the last war, when, together with Mr. Alexander Macintosh and Mr. J. Morrison, he formed a committee for the purchase of the whole of the equipment for the troops in New Zealand. Their services were on a voluntary basis and resulted, according to one authoritative statement, in a saving of millions of pounds to the Dominion.
Mr. Kirkcaldie is survived by two sons, Flying Officer Sidney Hugh (Peter) Kirkcaldie, R.N.Z.A.F., Wellington, and L.A.C. Lan Kirkcaldie, R.N.Z.A.F., now on active service overseas, and one daughter, Mrs. Peter Nash, of England, now living in Wellington. Mr. E. K. Kirkcaldie, of Wellington, is a brother, and Mrs. A. M. Rattray, Mrs. C. M. Mirams, Mrs. O. Finch, all of Wellington, and Mrs. G. Rose, of England, are sisters.
Tlie funeral will take place tomorrow morning. A short service will be held at the residence of Flying Officer Kirkcaldie, 19 Talavera Terrace, commencing at 10 o'clock, after which the cortege will leave for the Crematorium, Karori Cemetery.
