This afternoon their Excellencies the Governor-General and . Lady Newall, attended by Major C. J. Holland-Mar-tin, were present at a parade at Government House or Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments and Transport Units, at which her Excellency was presented with the society's badge of rank as Commandant-in-Chief of the Voluntary Aid Detachments. April 4. ! Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Newall attended Divine Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul this morning. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) is visiting Auckland. He expects to return to Wellington on Wednesday. Dr. C. R. Burns, of Wellington, has been nominated for a fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. Captain Robert Duncan, who has been engaged on various ships around the New Zealand coast for many years, has decided to retire because of ill health. He will continue to reside in j Sydney. The death is reported from London of Sir Haviland Hiley, general manager of the New Zealand railways from 1913 to 1919. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Traffic Commissioners, a post he had held since 1 1931. Sir Haviland Hiley joined the staff of the North Eastern Railway in 1891 and in time rose to responsible positions in various parts of England. From 1905 to 1908 he was passenger manager of the Great Northern Railway, London. In 1913 he came to New Zealand to reorganise and become general manager of the railways. Relinquishing this post in 1919, he became in the following year a member of the Indian Government Commission on the administration of the Indian Railways. In 1923 he visited Mexico to investigate engineering problems in that country, and in 1926 he became adviser on railway questions to the Rhodesian Government. He was knighted in 1928.
