LADY NEWALL HELPS

WORK AT REPAIR DEPOT

Six hundred . pairs of socks were sorted by her Excellency Lady Newall in an hour and a half when she visited the Army clothing repair depot yesterday. The socks. are sorted into six different colours,; ranging from light grey to dark grey, blue greys, , and almost blacks.. The committee members are most grateful for the assistance of her Excellency. In the last ten days' since JLady Newall first visited the depot the attendance, of helpers has doubled. :

Army repair wbrk originated when Mrs; F.-H. Whatley and Mrs. J. M. Unsworth inspected' the discarded clothing, with a view to hiaving it cut down for: children's garments. It ', was then considered that uniforms could be repaired for further use, and mended samples were'- sent to the Minister of Defence, '■'~. '.?.

As soon as the clothing goes back'to the'Arniy it is reissued." .The:be_.t;:goes to our- own -'ifbreed Xx and' "the rest "...Id prisoners '• of -war. Every, issue of repaired clothing given to.the prisoners of war- makes it possible to give our boys another, new issue, and every ton of woollen clothing salvaged makes it possible to issue another ton of. woollen goods to> the civilian population. . Owing to the fact that the committee, has to > give up the premises at 12 Marion Street to the. owner, arrangements have been made for the Army clothing, repairs to be transferred to 21 Courtenay Place. Work will be carried on as. usual, at-the Marion Street depot until Saturday, and at the new address from Monday next. Since the inception of the depot, 750 bundles of clothing have been repaired. .
