RACING COMMENT

From Behind. —Whereas earlier in his racing Daljarrock was repeatedly found out in front forcing the pace, on the second day at Trentham he was tried in behind over a mile. The tactics proved fairly satisfactory, for he came home well for third. Again in the open sprint at; Otaki on Saturday, he 'was several places back early, but came home strongly to take the honours'. AH Useful.—Since going to the stud the. Day. Comet mare Aurora Borealis, winner, of the G;N. Steeplechase and Grand National Steeplechase in 1930, has produced three good sorts in Aurora's Love, Aurora's Star, and Arctic Dawn. The mare was purchased a few years back by Mr. J. H. Grigg, of Longbeach, who faced Arctic Dawn originally. However, the gelding now carries the colours of Mr. C. G. Tansey, and although: he failed in his outings at Trentham he more than paid expenses of .the trip in the.Pahiatua Cup. He will now go on to Hawera for the Egmont Cup. Close Finishes.—There were several exciting finishes at Otaki on Saturday and only the judge could determine the correct positions. There was some difference- of opinion, as to the placings in the Maiden Race and the Pahiatua Cup, but experience has shown what a difference even a fraction off the true line can make. All too many sup- : porters of a beaten horse fail to recognise that fact.'

Badly Away.—During his hack career Pompit displayed. 1 ability to begin, but in his recent outings he has been sacrificing too much ground in the early stages of his racing. He was standing up the leaders a lot of ground in the Eketahuna Handicap at Otaki on Saturday and did well to get up for third, a head behind Duality * who had a good run.
