ADVANCE CONTINUES
BIG OUTFLANKING MOVEMENT
LONDON, February 2.
_;The latest news from Russia Is of advances-by the-Red- Army, on almost the whole of the 200-mile front from Voronezh to the Donets. At the same time, their push, through the northern Caucasus along the railway line from Salsk has brought them within 35 miles of Rostov.
The "News Chronicle" correspondent says that these Caucasus advances have ■brought the Russians nearer the railway junction of Bataisk, which commands the only land outlet for the German forces in the Caucasus. The position here is now big with possibilities, none of them at all pleasant for the Germans.
r-North of Rostov the Russians are pressing relentlessly forward towards the Nazi defence lines linking Kursk and Kharkov. The "News Chronicle" reporter says that on this part of the front the Germans have completely failed to stabilise their position and that every day shows fresh signs of enemy disorganisation. The Russians are now manoeuvring to outflank the whole German position in the Donets Basin. Already the German commanders in the extreme eastern part of the Don Bend, with the disaster at. Stalingrad fresh in their minds, must be very conscious they are out on a limb and a long way from home. a Naturally, the Germans plan to cling to the Donets Basin, but from their point of view it is beginning to look like a very gloomy failure. .The Russians are reported to have launched a Violent assault on the remnants of the Germans outside Stalingrad, and today's German communique said that the German defences had been broken through at many points after their troops had used up practically all their ammunition.
