NATIONAL SAVINGS
The chairman of the New Zealand National Savings Committee, Mr. T. N* Smallwood, states that receipts up to January 7 were £9,695,000. Of this--£4,563,000 came from sales of 3 per cent, five-year bonds and £5,132,000 from deposits to accounts, repayable on or after June 30, 1945.
Last December when everyone was enjoined to include National. Savings" gift suggestions _with Christmas pre-^ sents, bond sales reached £58,000, and ' 13,277 5s Gift Coupons and 36,584 6dWar Savings Stamps were bought. The total receipts for the month were just over a quarter of a million pounds*Though this seems a large amount, itdoes not compare with the total of' £430,000 in the previous December; being a direct indication of the temper of the people following the entry of Japan into the war.
