IN HOSPITAL IN N.Z.
BARNEY ROSS THE BOXER
(P.A.) AUCKLAND .February 2,
A former world's boxing champion, the first in history to hold both the lightweight and welterweight titles at the same time, is at present a patient in a United States service hospital in the Auckland Province. He is Corporal Barney Ross, United States Marine Corps, who has been evacuated to New Zealand after fighting with his unit for some months on Guadal-
canal, where he was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry near Kokumbona River. Ross was shell-shocked and wounded by shrapnel, which necessitated his evacuation to New Zealand. He is quiet, modest, and likeable, with a friendly smile for everybody. "They treat us marvellously here," he said. "I have never had better food and fresh milk. There was no fresh milk on Guadalcanal, and the treatment and the doctors are as good as you could find in any hospital in the United States."
