LEADERS DEFEATED

SENIOR COMPETITION

The commencement of the second' round of tii« Wellington Cricket Association's senior .■umpi'tiilou uji 'Saturday afternoon was eventful enough to create a quickening of interest, principally, in the fact that the leaders, Wellington College Oul Boys, were beaten by I'etone. Thai result reduced the lead from Hult, who were, again successful, to three points. Air fc'oicc had their second win, to which Crawford was an outstanding i.-ontriou-ior, another ceniury coming from his bat. Other, teams to win ou the day, each win uelus on the first innings, were MidlandWellington (by default), Ivilbiruie, aud Institute Old Boys.

In addition to Crawford's high-seoriun.- effort, there were v number of good batting performatives, notable amongst which was Masson's SO, which had much to uo with t'etone's success over the leaders. .Mason Is a promoted third grade player. Wall topped tho half-century mark for Hull, and Vance made 59 for University. Two splendid allround performances were those of J. Astieuden (Kl'lbiruio) and D. Hay (Karori) in the one match. Ashenden rattled on 59 in less than half an hour and he also took five wickets, this double being .chiefly responsible for Klibirnie's win. Hay, with 55 aud four for 41, did his pan for Karori, but inert*-was not 'QUi'ttt suftk'ii.'iil from the others to turn I tie scale. The same • applied to -Whyte's perturtuancu tor Wellington College Old Boys, this niayer heading the bowling for Hie day with seven for Sti and also making top score .for his side. U'yhrberg aim' Stringer batted well for Air Force and University respectively, the scoring in this match being the highest of the day. One of the best bowling performances, in this series of matches was by the former New Zealand representative M. Henderson, who look six wickets at small cost for his old club, Institute Old Boys; for whom Allen also bowled well. Other bowlers to achieve good results were Campbell, Mason (making him rank with, the all-roumlers). G. Dickinson. Chapman, Muir, and Metcalf.
