JAP AIR ATTACK
U.S. CONSOLIDATION ON GUADALCANAL
(Rec. 10.50 a.m.) WASHINGTON, January 26. A Navy Department communi?ue says; "On January 25 a large brce of Japanese dive-bombers, twin-engined bombers, and fighters headed for Guadalcanal was intercepted and attacked' by United States aircraft. The enemy planes were driven off, and no bombs were dropped on United States positions. Four Japanese Zeros were shot down. No United States planes were lost. 'Two units of United States ground forces joined up at Kbkunbona, on Guadalcanal, after one unit had entered a village? _Rom along the beach to the eaist and the other had encircled a. strong enemy pocket, entering Kokuribona from the south. The manoeuvre resulted in giving the United States forces unrestricted use of Kokunbona arid the beach to the east. Two hundred and ninety-three Japanese were killed and five were taken prisoner during the operation. Seven 77mm. guns, two 37mm. guns, one tank, several trucks, three 40mm. anti-aircraft guns,' and various other field pieces and small arms were captured in offensive operations against the enemy resistance."
