MINISTER'S WARNING
POSSIBLE COUNTER-ATTACK
IN PAPUA
CANBERRA, January 25. A warning that Japan would try to counter-attack in Papua was given today by the Minister of the Army, Mr. Forde, in appealing for aid from the United Nations to strike new blows against the Japanese. More equipment and more army and air force personnel were needed to follow up the Allied gains in this theatre, he said. The success at Sanananda provided merely a breathing space, which must be used to perfect Australia's .fighting organisation. "No student of the global war position can look upon the South-west Pacific as a sideshow," said Mr. Forde. "It is a theatre of first-rate importance' to the United Nations." Given th« necessary equipment, and particularly air striking power, Australia was capable" of dealing very heavy blows I against the powerful and well-equipped j enemy, he said.
