FREIGHTER SCUTTLED

GERMAN BLOCKADE-RUNNER

(Rec. 9 a.m:) NEW YORK, Jan. 24. Somewhere in the Atlantic, says the Associated Press, German sailors manning a blockade-running freighter disguised as a Norwegian, ran up the Nazi flag and scuttled their ship under the guns of an American naval force. The ship presumably was bound for Japan. Its cargo included clothing, lime, medicine, coils of wire rope, paint, pigments, and rope made from coconut fibre. There was also on board an armed motor torpedo-boat. Prompt action by the American force prevented the Germans launching it. Sixtytwo officers and men, 24 of whom were believed to be naval men, were taken prisoner.
