GREAT CLEARANCE
POPULATION OF MARSEILLES LONDON. January 25. Vichy radio stated that French and German police have carried out the evacuation of 40,000 inhabitants from the "old port" of Marseilles, on military and security grounds. The French police have also purged the town of Marseilles. They took 6000 persons into custody and closed 1000 cafes and bars. The Prefect of Marseilles said that those taken into custody gravely menaced the security of the city apd exposed the population to daagSr:. The evacuees from the old port will be permanently settled in the, Rhone area. Berlin radio said that. the Vichy Government has decreed penalties, including death, for sabotage of public transport. ■
