PLANE HITS CLIFF
Six airmen of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, including three with next-of-kin in Wellington, were killed in two aircraft accidents yesterday. One accident occurred during flying training and the other during operational training. Two men lost their lives when an aircraft engaged in flying training crashed early in the afternoon. They were: Pilot Officer Rolph Joseph Benfield. Next-of-kin: -Mrs. S. J. Benfield, 73 Devonshire Road, Miramar, Wellington (w.). Pilot Officer Cyril Henry Comrie. Next-of-kin: Mrs. H. Comrie, 4a Hutt Road, Thorndon, Wellington (w.). When an aircraft engaged in operational training exercise flew into a cliff during fog yesterday, the entire crew of four lost their lives. They were: Flight Lieutenant John Humfrey Deans. Next-of-kin: Mrs. J. H. Deans, Bulls (w.). Flying Officer James Derrick Philson. Next-of : kin: Mr. R. T. Philson, No. 7 Ist Avenue, Devonport, Auckland (f.). Sergeant John Andrews Power. Next-of-kin: Mr. J. L. Power, Okato, New Plymouth (f.). Sergeant Hugh Winton Steel. Next-of-kin: Mr. George Steel, 10 Severn Street, Island Bay, Wellington (f.).
