ILLEGAL TRADE
UNCUSTOMED AMERICAN
CIGARETTES
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 22. The wide diversity of ways in which uncustomed American cigarettes have come into circulation in Auckland was revealed in prosecutions in the Magistrate's Court today. Mr. V. R. Meredith, Crown Prosecutor, conducting cases against persons found in possession of uncustomed goods, said that American tobacco and cigarettes brought into the country duty free were solely for use by American troops, but' it had been found that quantities of these duty-free goods had got into several hands and there had been trafficking in them. The seriousness of this position was the loss of revenue to the Government and unfair competition with legitimate traders. For having in their possession uncustomed cigarettes, William Cleary, D J Maher, and Flora McKenzie were each fined £25. Arthur Grange, for selling uncustomed cigarettes, was fined £25 on each of two charges. A. J Andrews, Rotorua, was fined £35 for having in his possession uncustomed cigarettes.
