FIFTH SEA LORD

APPOINTMENT MADE

LONDON, January 22. The position of Fifth Sea Lord, which has been vacant for some time, has been filled with the appointment of Rear-Admiral D. W. Boyd, C.8.E., D.S.C., who will also take over the duties of chief of naval air equipment. He will also supervise matters relating to the Fleet Air Arm. Rear-Admiral Boyd is 51, and organised the air attack which crippled the Italian fleet at Taranto. He was in command of the carriers Illustrious and Formidable, and while in the latter ship helped to bring the Italians to battle at Cape Matapan.
