MANUFACTURING LIMITS

Referring to the Household, Furniture Manufacture Control Notice, gazetted tonight, enforcing a standard specification for simplification of furniture, the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) said that shortage of supplies and manpower within the industry made this action necessary. The specification prohibits the manufacture of non-essential items listed, including plant-stands, standard lamps, cutlery cabinets, cocktail cabinets glass-fronted bookcases and cupboards, etc. Occasional tables and tea wagons are required to conform to maximum dimensions stipulated in the specification which satisfy service considerations while avoiding undue de? mand on materials and manpower and without unduly restricting design. The number of pieces in a bedroom suite is limited to four or five, according to whether twin beds or double beds are to be used. Maximum dimensional requirements are also established for duchesse chests, wardrobes, bedsteads, and tallboys. The number of drawers an 4 the size of mirrors axe also restricted. Dining-room suites are limited to six pieces, which are to be manufactured within the maximum dimensional requirements as laic} down for sideboards, tables, settees, and chairs.
