FATE OF AUSTRALIAN

OFFENDERS

SYDNEY, January 10. Eighty Sydney men who absented themselves from work on New Year's Day have been convicted and placed on a £20 bond each to obey the National Security (Holiday and Annual Leave) Regulations. These will be in force for the duration of the war and six months afterwards. Any man breaking the bond must pay £20 or go to gaol for a fortnight. In passing sentence, the Magistrate said that he adopted this course since the imprisonment of men engaged on war work would only hamper the war effort, while fines might penalise people other than the defendants. Hundreds more prosecutions for New Year's Day absenteeism are still to be It was also announced that 119 miners and one mine manager are to be prosecuted for coal stoppages during the week.
