PUNISHMENT OF DARLAN'S'
MURDERER
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 27. ■ The pace with which an undefined French authority in Algiers acted as judge, jury, and execution of Admiral Darlan's unnamed assailant has. caused concern in London, says the political writer of the "Observer." It is felt that Darlan's administration throughout has been more an Allied responsibility than a purely local French affair. The injudicial speed and secrecy with which the murderer was punished has brought the doubts aroused by the Darlan affair more into the open. ..Whatever else emerges from this disquieting chapter, Parliament will want a great deal more information than has so far been forthcoming. It is now felt that there are legitimate grounds for increasing the Allied influence in the whole of North Africa. The Algiers correspondent of the British United Press says that Darlan's slayer was executed during an air raid. The noise of the plane motors .and of the anti-aircraft guns drowned that of the firing squad's shots. The •assassin is reported to have showed no signs of emotion. The execution occurred only a few hours before Darlan's funeral; at which there marched a detachment of British sailors bearing the Union Jack and of American troops bearing the "Stars and Stripes."—B.O.W.
